I want to talk about a powerful tool known as unity. A state of togetherness, where everyone works for a common good or a greater goal, while retaining their individuality despite partisan leanings, religious views, orientations, and affiliations, everyone putting their hands and talents into the same bowl and mixing it together. What strength this act contains. Strength to overthrow governments, strength to get anything they want done, strength to stop evil, strength to promote good, and strength to overcome that most crippling emotion, fear. It has been proven that when the masses really come together as a mass, for whatever reasons, things have no choice but to change. Look at the Velvet Revolution of 1989. On one side of the street, we have a hard line government, who routinely violated the people’s rights and on the other side of the street, we have the workers, who came together like a body ready to demolish the house and tear the foundation apart. This is an excellent example of unity.
Here in the U.S, we are a divided nation. There exists bitter divisions on almost every issue, and these issues whether it is politics, religion, racism, biases, keeps us, as the people separated from one another. It is sad. but this is the reality now. How do we get past this? I wish I had the concrete answer, but we need to in these times of uncertainty if we are to survive. Maybe we need to look at the examples of the past, like Charter 77 and the Velvet Revolution. If anything is going to happen, it cannot be based on pundit politics, religious doctrine, classism, or racial prejudices. Look at Charter 77, a unification not based on any of these things but a bond based on the common good, and a bond born out of living under oppression. Not many people signed Charter 77, but the acts of individuals united started the liberation process. All I can hope is that we, as individuals, can unite under a common good and do this as well in our own nation.
